FRS Filament Repair Service was started in 1973 by Mr Alex Strachan in Edinburgh, Scotland, then operating from the Chemistry Dept. of Heriot-Watt University where the new 'V.G. MS30' was at the cutting edge of scientific research. The initial layout was only £10 which paid for a 'mail shot' to other universities and for some stationary. The business has now been run for over 30 years by Mr Strachan who would now like to invest more time in his hobby. In the meantime the amount of business and the trading have grown.
After hearing of Mr Strachan retiring and closing down FRS we decided to "jump in" and take over the business. As we had been working together for many years already we thought it would be a great loss for the users of mass spectrometers. The new owner, an Englishman based in Germany with a reputable laboratory, has many years of experience in mass spectrometry and in the past sent his filaments to FRS for repair. The reason was always the good quality and very competitive prices. Our staff have been trained by Mr Strachan and we are sure we will be able to deliver the same quality customers received from FRS in Edinburgh.
A word from Mr Strachan himself:
I extend my best wishes to my past customers. I am both confident and delighted that 'Filament Repair Service' lives on, in the very safe hands of Dr Gerald Prior.
A word from the new owner:
The good quality of work conducted by Mr Strachan is known by many users of mass spectrometers. I personally have always sent my filaments for repair to FRS, this was already the case when I was still at university. Mr Strachan has given us much detailed training in the past weeks and his detailed notes on various specialities and specifications are priceless. We are quite honoured to take over the business and we will take great pride in the work we do for our customers so that the name 'FRS' still stands for quality repairs for many years to come. We would like to take the opportunity to thank Mr Strachan for all his assistance in the past weeks and we wish him all the best for the future and many joyous summers on his yacht.
